I would first like to apologize for the shitty hand-drawness of it all. But here are some charts I made of the energies discussed in the story beginning with a key, to understand what the shapes in the charts mean.
Whoa I am confused and enlightened and amazed. How occult of you, Pen.
So I gather these are more than Venn diagrams. Are you saying the relative size of the components is significant? Is their layout significant... I mean, in some alternative (or mathematical) dimension is this an actual plot of how energies are structured? Like crystals or molecules in a way? Could beings like Selket with the power to see the energies of others draw this sort of diagram based on what they see, or is their perception more limited?
My nomination for best blog tag ever: "The Metaphysics of Blue Lake" :-D
I find myself having to hash out the belief system of the story more and more as we get into Ermengarde's problems and what is an Ib and yadda yadda. It's best to maybe start this new series of behind the scenes posts with the raw basics. Almost like starting a Biology class with a diagram of a cell.
The relative size does not matter. I should have made a note. That was just my half-assed doodling at work. As far as the actual plot of how energies are structured is concerned, this is the layout (in some other, conceptual reality). If you were take a walk through Jack Dalton, first stop would be the magical energy, the next would be his life force, etc.
Selket is an interesting case. She seems to have a problem where she can't not see energies. However she can only see the outermost energies- magic and life. She used to be a Magus so she would know these diagrams and would draw the outer shapes. If she had to sit down and drawn the energies for you as she perceived them, they would look like amorphous clouds of varying colors. Rarely, she might come across damaged ones that shoot off sparks. Or in the case of Jack, she would draw something akin to heat waves around him and a fire at the center of him (magic and life force respectively). However, in the case of Kvornan, she can only see the life force. His magic is in everything so it isn't perceptible.
Addison London can see magical energy if he squints (metaphorically). He doesn't have magic but Kvornan was able to teach him that much. His diagram, not knowing anything about the diagrams set by the Magi, would probably look like a stick figure with a circle around them.
Kvornan is another squinter but when he squints, he can see everything. His diagrams would look like these. Only neater, probably. Handwriting would be worse though.
