Eee gads! Vampires!

vampires

Here's a little Q&A about my vampires. And yes, this is a pic that got cut from chapter 35. Anyhoo...

Q: Can vampires go out in the sunlight?
A: Yes! It just seems like a cartoonish way to die to me. Vampires' eyes are pretty photosensitive, though. Kvornan gets headaches on bright days. He treats them with aspirin. Problem solved.
Q: Garlic?
A: Kvornan loves garlic.
Q: Reflections?
A: Of course they have reflections!
Q: Stakes through the heart?
A: Ah. Now that is different. If you stop the heart function, the vampire dies (regardless of how you stop the heart function). Any form of injury where the body cannot repair its self before the vampire bleeds to death would also kill the vampire.
Q: Crucifixes?
A: Nope.
Q: Coffins?
A: Eww. Certainly not.
Q: Man-corsets, fishnets and bondage pants?
A: Kvornan would rather shoot himself in the foot. Others might be seen sporting these though.
Q: Invite them in or they can't come in?
A: We know for a fact that Kvornan gets in where he wants to, invitation or no.
Q: How many vampires are there?
A: Kvornan knows of a few dozen (himself included) but also recognizes that there are many, many more out there.
Q: Do they hide or live amongst regular folk?
A: Depends on the vampire.
Q: Do they age?
A: The body stops aging at the point that they are turned.
Q: Are they immortal?
A: Potentially. The oldest vampire alive today is the first one and she isn't showing signs of kicking the bucket anytime soon.
Q: Do regular folk recognize their existence?
A: Nope. Vampires fit into the same category as the Tooth Fairy and Big Foot.
Q: How often do they need to feed?
A: Depends on the size and age of the vampire. Smaller and/or older = needs less to feed less.
Q: Pallor?
A: Yes, vampires do lose much of their skin pigmentation after they turn.
Q: Heightened senses?
A: They develop a sixth sense that effects their sense of smell. They can process another person's health, physiognomy and the strength of his or her life energy (ie everything that would make that person's blood desirable or undesirable) by being in that person's proximity. That information is then translated into artificial "scents" that the vampire's brain tells him that he can smell but there isn't really anything there to smell. This comes up in the story.
Also, they have very keen vision in the dark.
Q: Flight?
A: No.
Q: Superhuman strength?
A: No.
Q: Do they have to kill people?
A: No. And they can transmit a chemical in their saliva that makes the victim forget it ever happened. Spit roofies!
Q: How do I become a vampire???
A: You must be chosen! More on that later in the actual story.
